Hornets Fall 75-71

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – No. 18 Virginia Wesleyan rallied for a 75-71 ODAC men's basketball victory over visiting Shenandoah University Wednesday evening.

The Hornets (6-18, 3-12 ODAC) held a 10-point lead with 15 minutes to play but saw VWU (20-4, 12-3) storm back and hold off a determined SU squad.

IN BRIEF

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead for good on a Daniel Spencer 3-point play with 30.1 seconds remaining, but Shenandoah stayed within striking distance until Corey Pelham hit a pair from the line to push the Marlins lead out to four points with one second left.

Following Spencer's 3-point play, Harry Wall canned a pair for the Hornets with 18 seconds remaining and Virginia Wesleyan then went 1-of-2 from the line following an SU foul.

Zach Garrett was then fouled with three seconds left, and the sophomore made the first of his two free throws to cut the deficit to one.

Unfortunately for the Shenandoah faithful, Garrett's second free throw hit the front and the back of the rim before rolling out, and the Hornets immediately fouled again.

Virginia Wesleyan again missed one of two from the line, giving SU the ball back with 2.5 seconds remaining.

The ensuing inbounds pass hit the ceiling, giving the ball back to the Marlins and forcing Shenandoah to foul. Pelham hit the two free throws to ice it at this point.

SU had taken that 10-point, 51-41, lead following a Garrett 3-pointer with 15:04 remaining. Virginia Wesleyan then scored 13 of the game's next 15 points in a span of 4:58 to jump in front 54-53.

The Marlins eventually extended their lead out to seven points with 4:48 left only to see Shenandoah tie it with a 10-3 run of its own. Garrett started that run with a '3 at 4:23 and Jalen Hill finished it with two free throws at 1:05.
