Women's Basketball Runs Past Royals

Hornets Hold EMU to Two Points in Second Quarter

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team dominated Eastern Mennonite from the tip-off to finish in an 79-43 ODAC win Tuesday evening in ODAC action.

The Hornets (13-7, 9-4 ODAC) led the Royals (3-16, 2-11) for all but 60 seconds of the contest and setting a program record for conference wins with the blowout victory.

The 36-point win is the largest margin of victory in the longtime series between the two programs.

IN BRIEF

Ragan Johnson put SU on the board first with a jump-shot in the paint. EMU answered to tie it up for the only time during the contest. The Hornets would then go on an 8-2 run and close out the quarter with a 10-point lead.

Shenandoah's conference-leading defense was on display in the second quarter, holding the hosts to just a pair of free throws with 1:30 left to play in the half. The Hornets extended the lead to 25 points by halftime. Ashley Stone drained three buckets, two from behind the arc, for eight points in the second.

EMU found some life after the break with a 13-4 run in the middle of the third.

The Hornets coasted through the third and fourth quarters. SU shot a collective 17-of-33 in the second half (51.5 percent). Sarah Sondrol led Shenandoah with 14 points, all of which were scored in the second half.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"We emphasized defense going into this game and keeping them to nine points in the first half made our second half a lot easier. Our post players did a phenomenal job getting open and our guards were finding them tonight contributing to 42 points in the paint. Every woman on our bench was able to get involved (41 points from the bench) and I am proud of how many different scorers we had." - Head Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft
