WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University Head Men's Wrestling Coach
Tim McGuire announced his program's inaugural schedule Friday morning.
Â
McGuire, who was hired in September, 2019 to build the Hornets 22
nd intercollegiate athletic program, has 13 regular season events on tap for the 2020-21 season.
Â
Included in this total is the squad's first-ever home meet, on January 7 versus fellow first-year program Emory & Henry. This contest, to be held in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center, will cap a day that starts with a youth wrestling event followed by a high school meet.
Â
The first-ever kicks off on Sunday, November 1 with the King of the Mont Open hosted the Penn State – Mont Alto.
Â
After taking the first of two trips to Alvernia University on November 8, the Hornets make a weekend trip to Salem, Virginia for the Southeast Duals Presented by Virginia Blue Ridge Sports and the US Marines Star City Classic November 14-15.
Â
Another new program, Roanoke College, hosts those two meets in conjunction with VBR Sports.
Â
A quad match at Gettysburg College on November 21 rounds out the opening month of the season. SU will face Wilkes and Southern Virginia universities in addition to host Gettysburg.
Â
In December, McGuire's squad travels to Alvernia, this time for dual meets against Alfred State, Ursinus and the host Golden Eagles, as well as Wilkes University.
Â
The final tune-up prior to the home meet is the Washington & Lee Invitational on January 2.
Â
Tentative invitationals at Johnson & Wales and Wheaton (Ill.) complete January with the regular season closing on February 6 at the Messiah College Invitational.
Â
In preparation for the NCAA Regionals on February 27, Shenandoah will compete in the Southeast Wrestling Conference Championships on February 13. Emory & Henry is the host of that meet.
Â
"We are so excited to have our first class of student-athletes coming to Shenandoah," McGuire said. "Each of them will play a significant role in building this program.
Â
"We have put together a competitive schedule to best prepare us for regionals and the NCAA Championships. We plan to be relevant immediately."
Â
"We can't wait to bring collegiate wrestling to the fans in the Northern Shenandoah Valley."
