Volleyball Swept at Washington & Lee

Hornets Swept by W&L and CNU

LEXINGTON, Va. – Shenandoah University dropped a pair of volleyball matches Saturday at a tri-match hosted by Washington & Lee.
 
The host Generals (14-3, 6-0 ODAC) swept SU (4-12, 1-5) in the opener before non-league opponent Christopher Newport turned the same trick in the middle match of the day.
 
WASHINGTON & LEE MATCH RECAP
W&L won at 19, 14, and 17 to complete the sweep over the Hornets in the opening match of the day.
 
Shenandoah hit .070 (31 kills – 23 errors --- 115 attempts) for the match with a high of .143 (10-5—35) in the second set.
 
The first set was the most competitive with the two teams trading the lead three times and being tied on four other occasions. A 6-2 W&L run in the middle of the set gave the Generals the lead for good.
 
Jillian Warter had nine kills for the Hornets with Kate Poppo adding seven along with a co-match-high 14 digs. Warter and Brooke Wagner both had 10 digs.
 
Caitlyn Houck had 28 of the squad's 31 assists.
 
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT RECAP
In the first matchup of the two programs since Shenandoah left the USA South following the 2011 season, CNU ran its winning streak over the Hornets to 33 matches with wins at 13, 16, and 17.
 
SU hit .128 (26-16—78) to .341 (40-11—85) for the perennial DIII power Captains.
 
The two teams were tied on seven occasions in the opening set, the last at 8-8, before a 5-2 CNU run allowed the Captains to pull away. They led all but one rotation for the remainder of the match.
 
Warter had a team-high 12 kills to go along with eight digs. Houck had 23 assists and Wagner led the defense with nine digs.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets return home Friday night for a 7 p.m. ODAC match versus Virginia Wesleyan.
