WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team opened up its weekend play Friday night with a 3-0 ODAC loss to Virginia Wesleyan.
The Hornets (4-13, 1-6 ODAC) battled league co-leader VWU (15-3, 6-0) close, dropping the three matches at 23, 23, and 11.
IN BRIEF
SU was very competitive in the opening two sets as the first set featured six ties and one lead change and the second 11 ties and five lead changes.
In the second, the Hornets led as late as 19-18 and was tied 23-23 before Virginia Wesleyan used a kill and a Shenandoah attack error to close out the set.
The Marlins led wire-to-wire in the third.
Sophomore
Jillian Warter led the hosts with 12 kills while junior
Kate Poppo added nine.
Libero
Brooke Wagner had nine digs and Warter seven.
Caitlyn Houck ran the offense and had 30 of the squad's 33 assists.
Virginia Wesleyan hit .319 (43 kills – 14 errors – 91 attempts) to .152 (33-18—99) for the Hornets.
