WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its first-ever women's basketball victory over Marymount University with a 62-56 non-league win Tuesday night at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.
Â
Shenandoah (3-1) had lost its last eight meetings with the Saints (3-3) dating back to the 2003 season but left little doubt in winning for the third time in four outings this season.
Â
IN BRIEF
Trailing 15-5 after one, SU cut the deficit to just one, 28-27, by halftime thanks to a 22-point second quarter and then dominated in the third.
Â
Shenandoah shot a sizzling 75 percent (9 of 12) from the field in that initial 10 minutes out of the locker room and turned the one-point deficit into a six-point lead.
Â
The two teams then split 30 fourth quarter points allowing Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club to close out the victory over the perennial DIII power.
Â
After the Saints were able to cut the SU lead to just four, 47-43, early in the fourth, SU pushed its lead back into double digits with an 8-2 run that ended with an
Olivia Weinel layup with 5:49 remaining. This advantage held at least eight points until MU scored three of the game's final four points over the last 45 seconds.
Â
The Saints had to foul four times in the final 12 seconds to put SU on the line and
Sarah Sondrol hit one of two to help clinch the victory.
