Generals Outlast Women's Hoops

Hornets Fall, 59-48

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Washington & Lee doubled up Shenandoah University in the third quarter on its way to a 59-48 ODAC women's basketball victory Wednesday night over the Hornets.
 
W&L (4-2, 2-0 ODAC) scored 16 of the 24 third quarter points to break open a close game with Shenandoah (3-2, 0-2).
 
IN BRIEF
The Hornets led 17-15 after one and after the Generals scored 16 of the 29 points in the second, saw the visitors take a 31-30 lead at the break.
 
In the third, W&L shot just 38 percent (6 of 16) from the field, but used a 12-0 run to start the stanza to take control of the ballgame.
 
Washington & Lee held Shenandoah scoreless until senior Olivia Weinel converted a fastbreak jumper at 3:25. Weinel would go on to score six of her team's eight points in the period.
 
SU would be able to cut its deficit to six points, 54-48, following a Sierra St. Cyr jumper with 2:35 to play, but could not come all the way back. The Generals were 5-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final 55 seconds to secure the win.
 
Weinel led the hosts with 10 points while Ragan Johnson added eight points and nine rebounds and St. Cyr six points and 10 boards.
 
Both teams shot 36 percent from the field (SU 22 of 62, W&L 20 of 55) with the visitors holding a 43-38 advantage on the glass.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets continue their homestand with a 4:30 contest Saturday afternoon versus Hollins. This game is the nightcap in an ODAC doubleheader with the SU men. The Shenandoah men take on Ferrum at 2.
