NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team completed non-conference play Thursday with an 82-70 loss to Southern Virginia.
Southern Virginia (6-5) earned the victory in the second game of the CNU Captains Classic over SU (2-9) on the strength of 14 3-pointers.
IN BRIEF
The Knights made 12 of those 14 '3's in the first half as they opened up 43-25 lead. SVU shot 67 percent (12 of 18) from beyond the arc in the opening stanza to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Shenandoah refused to fold its tents, however, and made it a game midway through the second.
The Hornets held Southern Virginia without a point for the initial 5:33 of the second and cut its deficit from 16 points to eight in the process.
Unfortunately for SU, this would be as close as it would come. SVU was able to answer three different Shenandoah runs with crucial buckets and never let its lead dip below the eight-point mark.
The Knights then closed the game out by making seven of eight from the line over the final 1:08 and hold the Hornets off.
Jaylen Williams, who will be officially named to the All-Tournament team on Friday, led Shenandoah with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Mekhi Mims also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards while
Davion Roberts and
Anthony Cowan both had 10 points.
Shenandoah shot 35 percent (25-of-71) to 54 percent (27-of-50) for the Knights. SU grabbed 40 of the game's 75 rebounds.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah returns to ODAC play on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Bridgewater.
