WINCHESTER, Va. – The short-handed Shenandoah University men's basketball team returned to action Wednesday evening with a 98-66 ODAC loss to Washington & Lee.
Â
Shenandoah (2-10, 1-2 ODAC) took to the court with just one day of preparation for the Generals (5-6, 3-2) following a five-day COVID pause.
Â
IN BRIEF
Playing without five players, including the league's leading scorer,
Jaylen Williams, SU was no match for W&L.
Â
Washington & Lee scored the game's initial eight points and held a 13-point (17-4) lead by the first media timeout at 13:48. The Generals would expand that lead out to 27 points by the 9:10 and had a 38-point advantage before
Noah McClanahan closed out the first half scoring with a pair of free throws four seconds before the buzzer.
Â
The Hornets saw W&L shoot 56 percent (20-of-36) from the floor and make nine 3-pointers in scoring 56 first half points. SU shot 19 percent (6-of-31) in the opening stanza.
Â
The second half was much closer, with Shenandoah outscoring the Generals 46-42, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
Â
Trevor Kelly paced the hosts with 14 points and
Deondre McNeill added 11 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Â
Shenandoah ended up 19-of-63 from the field (30 percent) with Washington & Lee shooting an even 50 percent by making 36 of 72 attempts and hitting 17 of 40 attempts (43 percent) from behind the arc. SU owned the boards with a 52-33 advantage.
