Men's Basketball Claws Panthers

Hornets Win, 81-71

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its first ODAC victory of the season Saturday with an 81-71 home win over Ferrum College.
 
Shenandoah (2-5, 1-1 ODAC) used back-to-back 3-pointers with three minutes to play to secure the win over Ferrum (4-3, 0-2).
 
IN BRIEF
SU, which led by 17 points, 45-28, at halftime and as much as 22 in the second, found itself in a three-point game following a James Smith Jr. layup with 4:14 left.
 
Coming out of a time-out, Shenandoah answered with a Davion Roberts '3' from the corner and then a Gavin Bizyak '3' top of the key '3' to push the lead back out to nine points, 71-62.
 
Ferrum never seriously threatened again and the Hornets closed out the 10-point win with two layups and six free throws.
 
The win, the Hornets second consecutive in the Wilkins Center, snaps a 16-game conference losing streak that dated back to a 103-97 home victory over Bridgewater on Jan. 22, 2020.
 
Jaylen Williams, who had a career-high 40 points in Wednesday's game at Eastern Mennonite, led the victors with 29 points with Roberts adding 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
Shenandoah shot 45 percent (27-of-60) for the game after ripping the nets at a 54 percent clip (15-of-28) in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Ferrum, which shot 37 percent (27-of-73), had a 47-39 edge on the glass.
 
UP NEXT
Shenandoah returns to the road for an 8 p.m. non-league game Wednesday night at Marymount.
