Women's Hoops Dominates Randolph

Win 62-47 in ODAC Play

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team took home its second straight ODAC win with a 62-47 victory at Randolph College Sunday afternoon.

The WildCats (1-4, 1-4 ODAC) scored first but their only lead of the game would disappear quickly as the Hornets (3-3, 2-2) would go on to score the game's next three buckets and never trail again. 

THE RUNDOWN
1st Quarter
After leading 6-2 at the 6:55 mark, Randolph would try to hang around, coming within one-point of the visitors on three occasions. A Sarah Sondrol '3' with 1:18 left remaining put the Hornets up by six, 18-12, to end the first quarter. 

2nd Quarter
The Hornets defense held the WildCats to just seven points in the second while extending their lead to 20 points at 39-19. The offensive output was spread throughout the team with Sondrol recording seven points and guards Sierra St. Cyr and Kayla Maxson scoring four points each.  Olivia Weinel, Ragan Johnson, and Jordan Yeakle added baskets of their own. 

3rd Quarter
The two teams would trade buckets throughout the third. Shenandoah's lead was cut to 17 points by the end of the stanza. 

4th Quarter
Randolph did end up out-scoring SU in the final quarter, 14-12, as both teams combined to shoot 9 for 33 (27 percent) from the floor. SU extended their lead to as many as 23 with 7:40 left to play.

STATS OF THE DAY 
  • The Hornets shot 25 of 65 (39 percent) from the field and was 10 for 14 from the stripe (71 percent)
  • SU outrebounded Randolph 47-37
  • Johnson led the way for the Hornets with 15 points
  • Sondrol added 12 points with Weinel and St. Cyr both reached double digits at an even 10 points.
  • Freshman Kayla Maxson had a season-high nine points in her young collegiate career.

UP NEXT
The Hornets travel to Roanoke on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
