Roanoke Slips Past Women's Hoops

Maroons Win, 63-52

SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College completed a women's basketball sweep over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon with a 63-52 ODAC win. 

The two teams kept it tight for the first half but the Maroons (7-1, 4-1 ODAC) pulled away in the third quarter to defeat the Hornets (3-5, 2-4).

THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter

Shenandoah led the entire first quarter after jumping out to a hot start with Sarah Sondrol and Olivia Weinel finding the hoop first on back-to-back possessions. SU shot 6 of 14 in the opening stanza. With three seconds left on the clock, Sondrol found Diandra Mundle for a jumper to extend the Hornets' lead 14-11. 

2nd Quarter

Shenandoah led by as much as five points after a Maggie Rooklin bucket at 8:10. Roanoke began to claw their way back and the Maroons ended the half with a Renee Alquiza 3-pointer to put them up by one. 

3rd Quarter

Coming out of halftime, Shenandoah trailed 24-23. The hosts defense held the Hornets scoreless for nearly five minutes and went on a 9-0 run during that span. SU shot 0 for 8 with three turnovers that RC was able to capitalize on during the cold-spell. Ragan Johnson broke the scoreless streak with a layup at 3:36. 

The two teams would go on to trade buckets and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer put Roanoke ahead 47-37 heading into the final stanza.  

4th Quarter

SU cut the lead to just seven after scoring the initial two baskets with jumpers from Sierra St. Cyr and Madison Kimble but the Hornets suffered another 9-0 cold-streak as the Maroons scored on four of their next five possessions.

  • Johnson, St. Cyr, and Weinel all had a team-high 10 points. 
  • St. Cyr had a game-high 10 rebounds with five assists and steals. 
  • The two teams combined for 29 turnovers.
