FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – No. 21/35 Shenandoah University was dominant in sweeping a non-league baseball doubleheader from Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Shenandoah (3-1) was a 7-0 victor in the opener before completing the day with a 16-2 win over the Eagles (0-2) in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
In the opener, SU scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the seventh, but it was more than enough for sophomore
Michael Prosperi (1-0).
Â
Prosperi, who missed the entire 2019 season with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, tossed a complete game four-hitter in his first start of the 2021 campaign.
Â
Prosperi scattered four hits, walked two and struck out one in recording his second career shutout. The sophomore faced the minimum in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Â
Sophomore
Frankie Ritter gave the Hornets all of the offense they would need with an RBI double down the left-field line in the third.
Â
Two batters later,
Keegan Woolford made it 3-0 with a two-run single to right.
Â
In the seventh,
Anthony Ward had a two-run single to right center to plate Woolford and
Colby Martin. Both men had reached via base on balls.
Â
Ritter had two of the squad's six hits with Woolford and Ward both driving in a pair.
Â
Zach Adams (0-1) took the loss for UMW. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks against three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
GAME TWO
Crooked numbers in the second, third, sixth, and seventh added up to a 16-2 victory for the Hornets in game two.
Â
SU scored twice in the second, five times in the third, added three more in the sixth and completely blew the game open with a six-spot in the seventh.
Â
The offense banged out 12 hits for those 16 runs with all nine starters getting at least one each.
Â
Senior
Grant Thompson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases while Martin was 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Â
Henry Delavergne, who drove in one run in game one, and
Ryan Hayden both had two RBI.
Â
Matt House (1-0), the third of five Shenandoah pitchers, earned the win with two innings of relief work. He was perfect in those two innings, needing just 21 pitches to retire all six hitters he faced.
Â
Alex Kyte took the loss for the Eagles. He gave up four runs on three hits and one walk in 2 1/3.
