WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Randolph-Macon scored three of the game's final four touchdowns to secure a 52-38 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah Friday night on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
Â
Shenandoah (0-3, 0-2 ODAC) led 31-30 following a
Rashadeen Byrd Jr. 68-yard touchdown run with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter only to see R-MC (3-0, 3-0) score the initial three touchdowns of the fourth to pull away.
IN DEPTH
Brant Butler capped the high-scoring affair by hauling in a one-yard TD pass from
Chris Sonnenberg with 64 seconds remaining, but Macon recovered the ensuing on-side kick and ran out the clock.
Â
After R-MC took a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter, SU came alive after making the switch to Sonnenberg at quarterback.
Â
The sophomore came in and directed a nine-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard
Patrick Ritchie field goal. Sonnenberg hit four consecutive passes on the drive, totaling 77 yards, before the drive stalled following a Macon timeout.
Â
The Shenandoah defense stepped up, picking off R-MC quarterback Presley Egbers on two consecutive possessions to turn that 14-3 deficit into a 17-14 lead.
Â
Byrd Jr. finished off the first drive with a five-yard TD run while
Daquan Pridget had a 48-yard pick six on the second.
Â
Egbers redeemed himself on the next drive, running it in from the 8 to give the visitors a 20-17 halftime lead.
Â
This lead change would be the second of five before the night was done.
Â
Byrd Jr. made it three lead changes in three possessions with a 51-yard TD run on 4
th-and-1 4:13 into the third.
Â
Macon came right back, driving 67-yards in just four plays to go back on top 27-24. Egbers, who finished the night with 174 yards rushing and 153 passing, scored this TD on a 25-yard rush.
Â
Byrd Jr. had his third and final TD following a 41-yard Macon field goal to give SU the lead for the last time at 31-30.
Â
David Wallis put R-MC on top to stay with a 1-yard TD reception from Egbers with 9:59 left. The two-point conversion gave the Yellow Jackets a 38-31 lead and they padded that advantage with TDs at 7:03 and 2:34.
Â
Macon finished with 490 yards in total offense to 336 for SU.
Â
Byrd Jr. led the Hornets with 143 yards rushing and three TDs on 10 attempts. Sonnenberg was 20 of 30 for 176 yards and one TD.
Â
Ben Burgan had 13 tackles and
Mason Caldwell 10 for the defense. Caldwell also converted a seven-yard run from punt formation on a 4
th-and-1 from the SU 34. That drive ended with Byrd Jr.'s second TD run.
