EMORY, Va. – No. 19/35 Shenandoah University kept its ODAC baseball record perfect on the season by sweeping a league doubleheader Saturday at Emory & Henry.
Â
In what is likely to be the Hornets (8-1, 5-0 ODAC) last trip to E&H, SU got a 7-0 win in the opener before completing the sweep over the Wasps (0-4, 0-4) with a 12-4 game two victory.
GAME ONE
Sophomore
Tad Dean was nearly unhittable in tossing a complete game and improving to 2-0 this spring in the 7-0 victory.
Â
Dean, a southpaw, struck out seven and allowed only two hits (a second inning infield single and a seventh inning double) as he faced only two batters over the minimum. He retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth.
Â
The SU offense gave Dean all of the support he would need by scratching out one run on one hit in the first before blowing the game open with three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Â
Grant Thompson had a three-run dinger in the seventh while
Anthony Ward brought home a pair with a double to center in the eighth.
Â
Kooper Anderson plated the Hornets final run by beating out a two-out, bases loaded single up the third base line.
Â
Anderson was 3-for-5 and Ward 2-for-4 to lead the SU offense.
GAME TWO
A six-run first, followed by three more in the second, put Shenandoah in total control of game two and the Hornets coasted home to the 12-4 victory.
Â
Colby Martin got the offense started with a three-run home run in the first and the Hornets banged out 16 hits in completing the sweep.
Â
Calvin Pastel (2-0) tossed the first 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
Â
Matt House and
Cade Templeton each recorded six outs in relief of Pastel.
Â
Anthony Ward had three hits and Martin,
Frankie Ritter,
Pearce Bucher,
Keegan Woolford, and
Haden Madagan two each in support of the pitchers.
Â
Martin and Bucher had three RBI each and Madagan two.
NOTABLE
Emory & Henry has announced its intention to reclassify its athletic programs to NCAA Division II this summer. Should that request be granted, the Wasps will depart the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Division III.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah travels to Washington & Lee on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. ODAC contest.
