WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 16/35 Shenandoah University ran its baseball winning streak to 10 games Saturday by sweeping an ODAC baseball doubleheader from Virginia Wesleyan.
Â
Shenandoah (11-1, 8-0 ODAC) was a 16-3 victor in game one before rallying for a 7-6 win over the Marlins (2-12, 2-5) in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
The Hornets hit early and often in the 16-3 victory.
Â
SU had 18 hits in the contest, including at least one by eight of nine starters and 16 by the top six hitters in the lineup.
Â
Those six:
Frankie Ritter,
Grant Thompson,
Colby Martin,
Anthony Ward,
Pearce Bucher, and
Keegan Woolford, were a combined 16-for-26 (.615) with six doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and 14 runs scored.
Â
Martin and Bucher, the last two ODAC Players of the Week, had the two dingers.
Â
Sophomore left-hander
Tad Dean earned his third win in as many decisions this spring with six innings of work. The current ODAC Pitcher of the Week, he allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three.
Â
Matt Barnes, Mike Usa and
CJ Morton pitched the seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively. Barnes and Usa both recorded two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
Trailing 6-0 after VWU scored single runs in the first and third and two each in the fourth and fifth, Shenandoah rallied with two in the sixth, one each in the seventh and eighth, and three in the ninth.
Â
Down to its last out,
Colby Martin tripled off the fence in center to bring home
Frankie Ritter and tie the game at 6-6.
Â
Anthony Ward, who had gotten SU initially on the board with a solo home run in sixth, then laced a single to left to bring Martin home with the winning run.
Â
All three SU runs in the ninth were unearned as the Marlins committed a pair of errors that allowed
Blaine Hansen and Ritter to reach base.
Â
The late game heroics made a winner of reliever
Michael Prosperi (2-0). Prosperi got the final four outs of the game for the Hornets and allowed one baserunner via a walk.
Â
Ward finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI with

Matt Moon getting two hits each.
Â
Bucher followed Ward's solo home run with one of his own.
