WINCHESTER, Va. –  Visiting Hampden-Sydney College scored three touchdowns in a span of just over three minutes of game time to fuel a 26-0 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah University Friday night on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.

Hampden-Sydney (2-0, 2-0 ODAC) pitched its second straight shutout in ODAC play in downing the Hornets (0-2, 0-1) for the sixth time in 10 lifetime meetings.

With the game scoreless, H-SC completed a 17-play, 98-yard drive with a Tanner Bernard to Dillon Costello 13-yard TD pass 35 seconds before halftime.

The Tigers took the second half kick and needed just 1:12 to drive 67 yards for the second score of the game. This was another Bernard to Costello hookup, this one covering 65 yards, and H-SC held a 12-0 lead after failing on a two-point conversion.

For Shenandoah, disaster now struck.

The Tigers pooched the kickoff and SU was unable to recover, giving Hampden-Sydney the ball on the Hornets 18.

Three plays later, H-SC held a 26-0 lead.

Shenandoah was held to 130 yards of offense on 46 plays with all but 16 yards coming through the air. Quarterback
Zack Mathis finished 15 of 27 for 114 yards and one interception.

Costello did the majority of damage for the visitors – he had nine catches for 133 yards and three touchdowns. H-SC also gained 222 yards on the ground and had 22 first downs.

Ben Burgan had 12 tackles and
Mason Caldwell 10 for the Hornets defense.
Jahquan Collins and
Jack Swope each had a solo sack.
The shutout loss is the first since SU was blanked by N.C. Wesleyan, 38-0, on November 6, 2010.
