Baseball Splits with Macon

Hornets Win Game One, 6-5

ASHLAND, Va. – No. 18 Shenandoah University earned a split of its ODAC baseball doubleheader at No. 12 Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon at Estes Park.

Shenandoah (14-4, 11-3 ODAC) was a 6-5 victor in the opener before R-MC (15-4, 12-1) rallied for a 15-7 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

Two hits, combined with a crucial R-MC error on a dropped fly ball, allowed SU to complete a comeback from four runs down and win, 6-5.

Colby Martin drove in what proved to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth.

Martin then came on to pitch in the bottom of the inning and retired the 'Jackets in order, the first and last on strikeouts, to earn his second save of the week.

Martin's sac fly to medium center came two batters after SU skipper Kevin Anderson was tossed after the home plate umpire called Haden Madagan out on strikes as he was seemingly hit by a pitch.

Now with one out, Kooper Anderson at second and a fired up team in the dugout, Frankie Ritter lofted a fly ball to left that was dropped right in front of the warning track to give SU runners on second and third with one out.

Grant Thompson tied the game with a single deep in the hole at short. He brought home Kooper Anderson, who had beat out an infield single to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

After trading single runs with Macon in the seventh, SU put itself in position to rally with three runs on three hits in the eighth. Senior Keegan Woolford had the big blast with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, with nobody out.

Thompson, who walked, and Martin, infield single, scored ahead of Woolford.

The late game rally made a winner of freshman Michael Usa. Usa (1-0) pitched two innings in relief of Tad Dean and allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one.

GAME TWO

Shenandoah, with one run in the first and four more in the second, looked to secure a sweep, but the Yellow Jackets had other ideas.

Macon tied it with a four-run third before pulling away with five runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

SU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh while Macon closed out the day's scoring with a two-run seventh.

The two teams combined for 30 hits in the nightcap with the hosts touching five Shenandoah pitchers for 20 of those.

Starter Calvin Pastel (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and one walk in 2.0 innings.

Ritter and Pearce Bucher both had two hits with Ritter, Thompson, Woolford, Kooper Anderson, and Logan Wood all driving in one run.

Madagan had a two-run home run in the second.
