MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – No. 15 Shenandoah University earned a split of its non-league baseball doubleheader at Penn State – Harrisburg Wednesday afternoon.
After dropping the opener 7-3 in eight innings, Shenandoah (17-5) was a 7-1 victor over the Lions (13-3) in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
PSU-H hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a walkoff, 7-3 victory.
Originally scheduled as a nine-inning game, the opener was shortened to seven innings prior to first pitch in an effort to beat the rainy weather forecast for the area.
The game took an extra inning to complete as PSU-H answered an SU run in the fourth with one of its own in the fifth.
In the top of the eighth, Shenandoah scored a pair of unearned runs on a Lions throwing error, but could not hold the lead.
PSU-H got two singles to lead off its half of the frame and after a walk loaded the bases, tied the game as
Colby Martin (0-1) issued two more bases on balls.
Matt Parks then ended the game with a grand slam to right.
Martin, who was 2 for 3 at the plate, took the loss. He gave up six runs on three hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Michael Prosperi, the Hornets starter, struck out eight in 5.0 innings of work.
Pearce Bucher also had two hits.
GAME TWO
A six-run fourth provided enough offense for Shenandoah to earn the split with a 7-1 game two victory.
Haden Madagan, who had an RBI in game one, capped the six-spot with a two-run home run.
Martin, Bucher,
Keegan Woolford, and
Grant Thompson all drove in runs ahead of Madagan's blast. Thompson, Woolford and Bucher all singled to drive in runs with Martin plating his on a fielder's choice.
Thompson, Bucher, and Madagan had two hits each to lead the 10-hit attack.
Michael Usa (2-0) earned his second win as many appearances with 2.0 innings of relief work. He struck out one and did not allow a hit.
Reilly Owen started and struck out five in 3.0 innings of work.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah hosts the other set of ODAC Hornets, the University of Lynchburg, on Saturday in a noon ODAC doubleheader.
