Baseball Sweeps Lynchburg

Hornets Win, 2-0 and 4-3

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 15 Shenandoah University continued its winning ways by sweeping an ODAC baseball doubleheader from the University of Lynchburg Saturday afternoon.

Shenandoah (19-5, 13-3 ODAC) was a 2-0 victor in the opener before rallying past Lynchburg (21-10, 11-4) for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

Sophomore Tad Dean threw a complete game nine-hitter and the Hornets made single runs in the first and third stand up in the 2-0 win.

Dean (4-0) struck out nine, walked one and benefitted from three double plays (two inning-ending) in tossing his second complete game of the spring.

SU what proved to be the game-winning run in the first as Frankie Ritter led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Colby Martin's single to right.

In the third, Shenandoah made it 2-0 by scoring an unearned run on two hits and a crucial Lynchburg error. Kooper Anderson led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a bunt that Ritter beat out for an infield single. The throw to first went wide, allowing both men to advance another 90 feet.

Grant Thompson then drove in Anderson with a sacrifice fly to right.

Ritter finished 3-for-4 and Anderson 2-for-3.

GAME TWO

Lynchburg, with one run in the first and two in the seventh, led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning of game two, but gave up four runs on four hits to see SU take the 4-3 win.

Colby Martin provided the big blow in the frame with a bases loaded triple to right to tie the contest at 3-3. Two pitches later, Martin trotted home with the winning run thanks to a Keegan Woolford sacrifice fly to center.

Pinch hitter Jackson Foreman, Grant Thompson and Frankie Ritter scored on Martin's fourth triple of the season - Foreman and Ritter both reached on singles while Thompson had drawn a base on balls.

Junior Kyle Lisa came on for the ninth and worked around a leadoff single to shut the door on Lynchburg and complete the sweep. Lisa earned his first save by getting a fly to left, a strikeout and a foul out to third.

The offensive heroics and Lisa's work in the ninth made a winner of Matt House (2-0). House, the fifth of six SU pitchers in the contest, induced a fly to left versus the only batter he faced.

Martin finished the contest 4-for-4 with the three RBI.
