WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 15 Shenandoah University returned the favor Monday afternoon in downing No. 3 Salisbury, 12-1, in non-league baseball action.
Â
Shenandoah (20-6) hit four home runs and
Calvin Pastel tossed a complete game three-hitter to give SU the split of its two-game set versus Salisbury (14-3).
IN BRIEF
The Hornets jumped all over Salisbury starter Jimmy Atkins (3-1) for four runs on three hits in the second.
Haden Madagan drove in the first run with a double to left center before
Matt Moon drove in what proved to be the game-winning run by drawing a bases loaded walk.
Â
Salisbury scored its lone run in the third as Trent Saunders hit a solo home run to right.
Â
Saunders home run was an omen of things to come as SU hit two home runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth.
Â
Henry Delavergne hit the first home run, a solo shot, with
Frankie Ritter doing the same two batters later.
Â
Keegan Woolford, the Hornets all-time home runs leader, hit his seventh and eighth home runs of the season with a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run blast in the sixth. Both sailed over the fence in right center.
Â
The 11-hit, 12-run attack, which was finished off with Woolford sacrifice fly to left in the eighth, was more than enough for Pastel (3-1).
Â
Pastel threw 69 strikes in his 108-pitch complete game performance, struck out two and walked two while facing the minimum in the first, second, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth. The sophomore retired the final 10 hitters in order.
Â
Delavergne had three hits with Ritter, Woolford and
Pearce Bucher contributing two each.
Â
Woolford drove in five.
Â
Atkins gave up four runs on five hits and one walk in 3.0 innings. Salisbury used five pitchers.
