Baseball Splits with Tigers

Win Game Two, 5-3, After Falling in Game One, 4-3

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 15 Shenandoah University completed its ODAC baseball slate Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney.

Shenandoah (25-8, 17-5 ODAC) rebounded from a 4-3 loss to the Tigers (17-12, 12-10) in game one to win game two, 5-3.

GAME ONE

Hampden-Sydney scored two runs in the fourth, along with single runs in the fifth and sixth, before holding off Shenandoah in the 4-3 victory.

Shenandoah cut the deficit in half with one run in the eighth and had the tying run 90 feet from home plate with one out in the ninth, but HSC reliever Nic Graziano sandwiched a strikeout and a foul out around an intentional walk to Colby Martin to snuff out the SU threat.

Graziano's work in the ninth, in which he loaded the bases with a hit batsman, a single and the intentional pass, made a winner of Trenton Tiller.

Tiller (3-3) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk in 6.0 innings of work.

The two runs Tiller allowed came in the form of Henry Delavergne and Haden Madagan solo home runs. Delavergne hit his shot, his fourth of the year, in the third with Madagan doing the same in the sixth.

In the eighth, Pearce Bucher plated Martin with a double to right center. Martin had led off the frame with a single to left.

Martin and Bucher had two hits each.

Tad Dean (4-1) took the loss. He gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks in 4.0 innings. Dean also struck out three.

GAME TWO

A pair of two-run home runs, combined with a stellar Jacob Faivre pitching performance, added up to a 5-3 SU victory in the nightcap.

Martin took H-SC starter Justin Woodall deep for his seventh home run in the spring two batters into the SU first and then turned it over to Faivre (3-0).

The freshman right-hander went the first 6.0 innings, threw 70 pitches and allowed three runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out two before turning it over to Ethan Laird four batters into the seventh.

In the sixth, Keegan Woolford gave the Hornets some breathing room with a two-run home run to right. Woolford's home run, his 10th of the spring, plated Martin. Martin had beaten out an infield single immediately prior to Woolford stepping to the plate.

Bucher then doubled to center and scored on a Delavergne single to left.

Martin, Bucher, and Delavergne all had two hits in the win with Martin and Woolford each driving in a pair and Bucher posting two doubles.

Martin worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save.
