WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team battled for 40 minutes Monday night and was rewarded with a 65-57 ODAC victory over the University of Lynchburg.
Â
Shenandoah (12-4, 7-4 ODAC) found itself down 12-0 to its fellow set of ODAC Hornets (10-8, 6-5) as it missed 10 of its first 11 shots from the field, but refused to yield.
Â
IN BRIEF
Down 12, 35-23, after a pair of Kate Kolb free throws for Lynchburg, SU reeled off 11 of the game's next 13 points to trail by just three, 37-34, with 5:25 remaining in the third.
Â
Now in a contest, Shenandoah set about completing the comeback. Another run, this one 9-3 from the 6:18 to 3:54 marks of the fourth, brought the game back to even at 51-51.
Â
First-year Therese Greene, who finished with 14 points, had six of the points during the run with two buckets and a 2-of-3 performance from the free throw line. Her three-point play followed by a steal and a layup brought the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center crowd to its feet as that latter bucket tied the game.
Â
Lynchburg would retake the lead on two more occasions before
Sarah Sondrol gave the hosts the lead for good by banking in a 3-pointer with 1:47 left.
Â
Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club then made nine of 12 from the line, including its first five straight, in the final 53 seconds to secure the victory.
Â
Sondrol led the way with 20 points with
Olivia Weinel adding 13 to give SU three women in double figures. The hosts also had a 39-37 advantage on the glass.
Â
QUOTABLE
"This was probably the grittiest win I have been a part of here at Shenandoah," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "A good win in the throes of the season."
Â
UP NEXT
The Hornets continue this three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. ODAC game Wednesday night versus Roanoke.
