WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 16/17 Randolph-Macon used a 20-point first half Saturday to earn a 35-21 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah University.
The Yellow Jackets (7-0, 4-0 ODAC) had 539 yards in total offense versus Shenandoah (5-2, 2-2) to keep their record perfect on the season.
IN DEPTH
Shenandoah, which scored 21 second half points and had time run out after advancing to the R-MC 2-yard line, saw Macon throw three TD passes in the first half to take the 20-0 lead.
The 'Jackets scored all three TDs on third down, with quarterback Drew Campanale throwing touchdown passes of 32-, 55-, and 7 yards.
The Hornets answered back to start the second half, taking the opening kick and driving 75-yards in 11 plays and 5:35 to make it 20-7 following a
Steven Hugney 4-yard TD run on second-and-goal.
Macon got the ensuing kick at its own 47 and drove all the way to the SU 1 before being stopped on 4
th-and-goal.
Unfortunately for the Shentel Stadium faithful, SU went three-and-out on its next possession and R-MC answered with an 11-play, 70-yard drive that bridged the end of the third quarter to extend its lead out to 28-7.
That score and accompanying two-point conversion started a fourth quarter in which the teams traded two touchdowns each.
Shenandoah made it 28-14 on a Hugney to
Andre Jackson 11-yard TD pass at 10:57 and then 35-21 when Hugney hit graduate student
Ethan Bigbee for a 20-yard score at 3:17. The Hornets needed four plays to drive 75 yards for the former score and eight plays to drive 76 yards on the latter.
After forcing Macon to punt for the first time all day, SU drove from its own 38 to the R-MC 1 where Jackson was tackled following an 18-yard gain.
Macon had 297 of its 539 yards come through the air – Campanale was 19 of 26 for the 297 and four touchdowns against one interception.
Hugney was 23-of-36 for 328 yards and two TDs for the hosts. He also threw an interception.
Both interceptions were made in the end zone.
Quante Redd had 15 tackles for SU with
Keyshawn Wilder and
Ben Burgan making 11 stops each.
R-MC held the ball for 37:58.
