Royals Sweep Volleyball

Hornets Drop 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 Decision

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Eastern Mennonite University outlasted Shenandoah University Wednesday night in a 3-0 ODAC volleyball victory over the Hornets.
 
The Royals (8-12, 5-6 ODAC) never trailed in the first two sets but had to hold on in winning 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 over Shenandoah (8-14, 4-7).
 
IN BRIEF
SU trailed, 19-13, in the opening set before rallying to tie at 22-22 thanks two straight points from senior Kate Poppo. Unfortunately for the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center crowd, EMU got the serve back on a kill and registered two more kills on the next two serves to take the three-point set win.
 
A 7-0 run that started with a Hornets service error gave Eastern Mennonite a 13-6 lead in the second. Trailing 20-8, Shenandoah climbed back in it with seven straight points before the Royals scored four of the final five points to win, 25-18.
 
SU took its first lead of the night in the third and led as late as 12-11 only to see EMU score seven straight points to seize control and eventually coast home to the 25-20 win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Jillian Warter had a match-high 10 kills for the hosts with Becka Nguyen chipping in 16 assists and Kylie Danella 12.
 
Poppo had 19 digs and Warter nine.
 
Both teams hit .190 for the match with SU posting 35 kills against 13 errors in 116 attempts and EMU 38 kills versus 15 errors in 121 attempts.
 
UP NEXT
Shenandoah completes its season Friday night with a 6:30 ODAC Senior Night contest versus Lynchburg. Poppo and Brooke Wagner will be honored prior to the match.
