WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2022 ODAC Tournament with a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Averett University.
Shenandoah (11-6-2, 5-5 ODAC) clinches the eighth seed in the tourney with the victory over Averett (5-9-2, 3-6-1).
IN BRIEF
Elizabeth McGee sandwiched a pair of goals around a
Chandler Gallant tally to earn the Hornets first victory over the Cougars since SU left the USA South following the 2011 season.
McGee opened the game's scoring at 30:20 by heading home a deflected ball from 10-yards out. This would be the game's lone first half goal.
In the second half,
Chandler Gallant found herself beyond the AU defense and slipped her right-footed shot into the right side of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Now with a two-goal advantage and 32 minutes to play, Shenandoah could afford to play conservatively.
The Hornets kept up the pressure, however, and McGee finished off a
Kayla Jenkins pass with five minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.
The SU defense was outstanding, only allowing four Cougars shots, and Hornets goalkeeper
Karissa Dominick made three saves to post the shutout.
Shenandoah also had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
UP NEXT
The quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday. Official pairings will be announced Saturday night by the league office.
