WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team closed out 2022 Saturday afternoon with a 65-57 non-league loss at No. 23 University of Mary Washington.
The Eagles (11-2) won for the third time in the past four outings on the strength of a combined 36 points in the second and third periods versus Shenandoah (8-3).

With the Hornets leading 26-23 following a
Shawnise Campbell layup with 1:41 remaining in the second, UMW seized momentum by scoring the final seven points of the stanza including a pair of buckets sandwiched around a steal in the final 13 seconds.
Shenandoah, seeking its third victory in 13 lifetime meetings with the Eagles, was able to retake the lead with an 8-2 run to start the third but Mary Washington refused to fold its tents.
First-year
Emily Williams gave SU that 34-32 lead on a 3-pointer at 6:18 only to see UMW score 14 of the final 18 points of the stanza and take a 46-38 lead heading into the fourth.
The two teams split 38 points over the final 10 minutes with Mary Washington holding at least a four-point lead the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Terese Greene led Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club with 18 points while Campbell added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.
SU shot 49 percent (23 of 47) from the field and pulled down 24 rebounds. The Eagles, who had 37 rebounds that helped lead to 16 second-chance points, shot 41 percent (23 of 56).
NOTABLE
The loss closes out a calendar year for Shenandoah in which the Hornets won 24 games and their second ODAC title in four years. Smeltzer-Kraft's club won 24 of 30 games played in 2022.
