FERRUM, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team completed the most successful regular season in the university-era Saturday with a 63-42 victory at Ferrum.
Shenandoah (19-5, 13-5 ODAC) surpassed the 1999-2000 team for wins in season with its victory over Ferrum (5-20, 3-15).
IN BRIEF
The '99-'00 squad won the Dixie (now USA South) Conference title that year and finished the season with an 18-9 record following an NCAA Tournament loss at Roanoke.
The current squad is now two victories from tying the 1987-88 (Shenandoah College & Conservatory) team's program record of 21 wins.
After a slow start Saturday that saw the Panthers take an 15-11 lead after one, Shenandoah outscored its hosts 17-9 in the second to take a lead it would not relinquish. The game remained close, however, until SU scored 23 of the game's 30 fourth quarter points.
The Hornets shot an amazing 71 percent from the field (10-of-14) in that final stanza while seeing Ferrum miss 11 of its 12 attempts from the field.
Olivia Weinel, the two-time reigning ODAC Player of the Week, led the victors with 23 points. Classmate
Ragan Johnson added 15 points while
Shawnise Campbell had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Shenandoah shot 44 percent (25-of-56) for the game and had 52-34 advantage on the boards. This 18-rebound bulge led to 13 second-chance points.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah has a bye into the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals in Salem on Friday. SU is the fourth seed and will play fifth-seeded Randolph in the 3 p.m. contest.
