ASHLAND, Va. – Host Randolph-Macon escaped with a 56-55 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (14-5, 9-5 ODAC) had a chance to tie with three seconds remaining, but missed on a second free throw attempt and saw Macon (13-6, 11-2) grab the rebound and call timeout.
iN BRIEF
The 'Jackets elected to advance the ball into the frontcourt following the timeout, and with three fouls to give, SU was forced to try and go for a steal. R-MC successfully inbounded the ball twice to run out the clock and earn the victory.
The win gives the Yellow Jackets the sweep of the regular season series between the two programs and keeps their regular season title hopes alive.
The two teams traded the lead three times and were tied on three occasions in the fourth quarter before Macon took lead for good on a Catherine Kagey layup with 1:10 to play. The 'Jackets got a steal on the Hornets next possession, converting it for a layup, to score what proved to be their final points of the game.
Trailing by three, 56-53,
Terese Greene and
Olivia Weinel both made one of two from the line in the final 40 seconds to give SU a chance but the Hornets could not come all the way back. An excellent defensive effort on Macon's penultimate possession kept the margin to two points and gave SU the opportunity to score the game-tying points.
Weinel, the current ODAC Player of the Week, led the visitors with 25 points.
Sierra St. Cyr added 12 and Greene eight.
Juliana Park had 12 for R-MC.
The loss snaps the Hornets eight-game winning streak.
