Hornets Win Aikens Stadium Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team made its first-ever game at its new field a positive one with a 4-1 non-league victory Thursday night over Gettysburg College.

Playing for the first time at the newly constructed Aikens Stadium, the Hornets (1-0) scored in the 20th, 22nd, 24th, and 45th minutes to dispatch the Bullets (0-1).

IN BRIEF
Junior Farren Winter, who opened the game by wowing the overflow crowd with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, scored the first-ever goal on the new turf by finishing off a feed from Kelsey Jones at 19:01.

Mairead Mckibbin made it 2-0 just 84 seconds later, and then Elizabeth Ranberger scored at 23:24 to make it 3-0 in favor of the hosts.

Winter closed out the Hornets scoring by converting a Ranberger feed with one minute to play in the third.

Gettysburg avoided the shutout by scoring with four seconds remaining.

BY THE NUMBERS
Shenandoah outshot the Bullets, 18-4, and took six of the game's nine penalty corners.

GC goalie Emilia Saccento made three saves and Taylor Swann one for the victors.

NOTABLE
The game was the first ever for field hockey at Aikens Stadium, located on main campus between Goodson Chapel and Parker Hall. The field, originally constructed in 1992 for men's and women's soccer, and men's lacrosse, was reconstructed this spring and summer to be the new home for the field hockey and women's lacrosse programs as well as the university's new marching band.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah takes to the road this weekend for a 1 p.m. non-league game at Washington & Jefferson.
