Hockey Vetoes Presidents

Hornets Win, 10-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team earned its second win of the week Sunday with a 10-1 non-league victory at Washington & Jefferson.
 
In a game that was delayed by 2.5 hours because of travel difficulties, the Hornets (2-0) shook off the late start to score the initial seven goals of the game and pull away from the Presidents (0-2).
 
IN BRIEF
After a scoreless first quarter, SU scored three times in the second before adding the initial four goals of the third to take that commanding seven-goal lead.
 
W&J scored its lone goal with 1:29 to play in the third.
 
Shenandoah continued to press the action in the final 15 minutes, scoring in the 47th, 49th, and 56th minutes to provide the final margin of victory.
 
Mairead Mckibbin, who scored the squad's game-winner Thursday in the season opening victory over Gettysburg, had the game-winner again Sunday.
 
Mckibbin had four goals Sunday with her first goal, an unassisted tally at 18:46, putting the Hornets up, 2-0. She led all scorers with the four goals for eight points.
 
Kelsey Jones and Cassidy Morrison both had a goal and an assist while Lauren Tyre, Kate Robinson, Elizabeth Ranberger, and Mackenzie Watkins one goal each.
 
Abby Barefoot, with two assists, and Claudia Lenahan (one assist) rounded out the women in the scoring column.
 
Shenandoah outshot the Presidents, 35-6, and had a 23-4 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Taylor Swann made three saves in the win.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets are on the road next weekend, playing two games in Ohio. SU plays at Kenyon on Saturday and Wooster on Sunday.
