Hockey Soars Past Eagles

Hornets Win, 4-1

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team won its fifth straight match to start the 2022 season with a 4-1 non-league victory over Mary Washington Wednesday evening.

Shenandoah (5-0) took a lead it would not relinquish with a Lauren Tyre goal 11:44 in versus the Eagles (3-1).

IN BRIEF
The Hornets, who outshot UMW 27-9, dominated possession but were continually turned away for the remainder of the first by Eagles goalkeeper Bailey McNabb and the UMW defense. McNabb, who finished with six saves, had five of those in the initial 30 minutes of the contest with her teammates helping her out with three additional defensive saves.

SU wasted little time in breaking through after the halftime break.

Mairead Mckibbin, the reigning ODAC Player of the Week, scored at 33:40 off of a Kelsey Jones assist, and after Mary Washington answered back 62 seconds later, Jones set up Abby Barefoot at 42:54 to push the margin back to two goals.

Claudia Lenahan closed out the scoring at 52:17.

The Hornets also had a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah is back in action at home on Monday in a 7 p.m. non-league contest versus Wilson College.
