Hockey Downs Seahawks

Hornets Win, 4-1

WINCHESTER, Va. – A pair of goals scored 50 seconds apart propelled Shenandoah University to a 4-1 non-league field hockey victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Tuesday evening.

Cassidy Morrison and Farren Winter scored those two goals midway through the first quarter to give Shenandoah (9-0) all of the offense it would need versus the Seahawks (5-2).

IN BRIEF
SMCM took the initial lead of the contest on a Brenna Ziegler goal just 2:17 in, but the SU defense stepped up following Ziegler's tally. Hornets goalkeeper Taylor Swann made three saves and held the visitors off the board for the remaining 57:43.

Morrison's goal to tie the game at 1-1 as she deflected home a Lauren Tyre pass across the goalmouth at 6:55.

Just 50 seconds later, Farren Winter ripped a shot from just inside the circle that deflected off of an SMCM defender and in for what proved to be the game-winner.

In the fourth, Shenandoah pulled away with Kelsey Jones goals at 45:52 and 50:12. Madison Short assisted on the first of these two tallies.

The Hornets outshot the 'Hawks, 10-8, with the two teams splitting 16 penalty corners.

NOTABLE
Shenandoah was one of five teams receiving ranking consideration Tuesday in the latest NFHCA Division III Top 20 poll. SU is four points away from being ranked in the poll.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah is scheduled to play at Christopher Newport University Friday in non-league action. Should that change because of Hurricane Ian, updated schedule information will be posted to www.suhornets.com and to the department's social media pages.
