Women's Hoops Halts Generals

Hornets Win, 66-52

WINCHESTER, Va. – Host Shenandoah University dealt Washington & Lee its first ODAC women's basketball loss of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 62-56 victory at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

Shenandoah (11-5, 7-3 ODAC) held the Generals to a combined 14 points in the second and third quarters to pull away for the win over W&L (12-5, 9-1).

IN DEPTH
Trailing 20-16 after one, the Hornets scored the initial 19 points of the second quarter to take a 35-20 lead.

This run, which eventually reached 23-5 for the hosts over a span of just more than 10 minutes, finally ended for W&L on a Sofia Fiegelson 3-pointer 2:58 before halftime.

Shenandoah wasn't finished, however, and scored the final bucket of the half to take a 37-28 lead into the break.

SU shot an even 60 percent (9 of 15) in the stanza while holding its visitors to 15 percent shooting (2 of 13).

The Hornets cooled off considerably in the third, making 6 of 19 attempts (32 percent), but their defense was even better. Washington & Lee missed 16 of its 17 attempts from the field (six percent) as SU extended its lead by an additional eight points.

The Shenandoah lead remained in double digits the rest of the way as Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club coasted home to the 14-point win.

Junior guard Madisen Kimble led the way with a co-game-high 18 points with Terese Greene adding 16. Shawnise Campbell had 11 of the Hornets 48 rebounds to help SU win that category, 48-47.

Mary Schleusner had 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Generals.

Shenandoah scored 32 points in the paint and 20 points off of 18 W&L turnovers.
