Women's Soccer Falls in Tightly Contested Meeting Versus Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team lost 1-0 Tuesday night in an ODAC match at Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Hornets (8-3-4, 3-2-3 ODAC) and the Marlins (10-3-1, 6-0-1) battled in a closely contested meeting but the home team broke the deadlock with a goal in the 72nd minute.

IN BRIEF

Virginia Wesleyan controlled the first 25 minutes of the contest, including two great scoring chances in the first 10 minutes. The first of the chances bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and barely stayed out of the net as Kasie Kilmer and the Hornets' defense were able to cleat the ball.

Later in the first Shenandoah got chances of its own. On a free kick, Chandler Gallant took a chance at scoring and shot a ball that beat the Marlins goalkeeper but couldn't beat the pesky crossbar.

Kilmer helped keep the contest tied at the half as she made three saves in the first 45.

In the second half, the teams went back and forth before the Marlins could take advantage of a Hornets' foul. Lined up for a free kick, the Marlins crossed the ball into the box and got a lucky deflection right to one of their players, who shot the ball through the crowded box for the game's only goal.

Shenandoah got one last chance at tying the game in the 83rd minute but the Marlins' goalie made the save to get her team the win.

Kayla Jenkins and Madison Bruce led Shenandoah with two shots on goal. Kilmer made five saves in the game.
