Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker Against RMC

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team dropped a five set match, 3-2, on Friday night in an ODAC home match versus Randolph-Macon College.

The Hornets (6-15, 2-9 ODAC) went up 2-1 after three sets before the Yellow Jackets (15-4, 10-1) took the final two frames, including the final one 16-14.

IN BRIEF
RMC jumped out to an 11-2 lead early in the first with nine straight points after SU tied it up 2-2. Shenandoah rallied back to take the lead 15-13 with multiple kills and two aces by Emma Thompson. Thompson and SU held onto the lead until the Yellow Jackets tied it again at 17 a piece. A stretch of four straight points closed out the set for the visitors.

In set two it was Shenandoah who took the early lead as they flew to a 10-3 advantage, thanks to four errors by Randolph-Macon. SU never gave up the lead, winning the set 25-20 on a kill by Jillian Warter.

SU scored the first three points in the middle frame and they'd again hold the lead for the entire set. Aaliyah Chunn racked up two massive blocks with her team up late to help SU keep the momentum for the set win.

The two teams traded points in the final frame after RMC took the fourth set 25-13. The squads tied each other 11 times and had four lead changes in the decisive set. Down 13-14, Brooke Gast laid the hammer down on a kill to tie the set with Abby Lichtenfels providing the assist. However, two straight kills by the Yellow Jackets won the set and the match.

Seven Shenandoah players had either a solo block or block assist in the match. Eight of the nine players for SU had a kill.
