Hornets Buzz Past Maroons for Sixth Straight Win

SALEM, Va. – The Shenandoah field hockey team, hit the road for a conference matchup with Roanoke Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets (13-2, 6-1) emerged victorious over the Maroons (6-7, 4-3) by a final score of 4-1. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
 
The Hornets outshot the Maroons 16-5 and held the edge with shots on the cage at 8-5. 
Shenandoah also had more penalty corners with an 8-5 advantage.
Mairead McKibbin scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season and added two assists as well.
Kaitlyn Nakamura scored her first goal in a Hornet uniform.
Elizabeth Ranberger, who has been on an absolute tear over the last week, scored two more goals and added an assist on McKibbin's goal.
Taylor Swann started in goal and made four saves on the afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Hornets jumped out an early lead, capitalizing on their first shot of the game when Mairead McKibbin took the pass from Ranberger and put the ball in the back of the cage for her 12th goal of the season.  After two penalty corners and a blocked shot by Farren Winter, the Hornets would score their second of the period this time it would be Elizabeth Ranberger scoring her ninth goal of the season on an assist from McKibbin.  The defense did a fantastic job and only allowed one shot, that Taylor Swann had no trouble saving.  The Hornets would take a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.
 
In the second, the Maroons would catch the Hornets off guard and cut the lead in half on a goal from Lindsey Keyes.  However, the Hornets would shut the Maroons down for the rest of the half and Shenandoah would take a 2-1 lead into the break.
 
In the fourth, Kaitlyn Nakamura would get her first goal of the season off a penalty corner.  The Maroons would apply some pressure three penalty corners of their own and a shot that Swann was able to save.  With the clock winding down in the game, Ranberger would put the Maroons away scoring her second of the game, and 10th of the season. 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Hornets have two regular season games left in the season, they will travel to Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon, before the final home game of the regular season next Saturday against Sweet Briar.
