WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University field hockey team took the field for the final home game of the regular season with a matchup with Sweet Briar College. The Hornets (15-2, 8-1) defeated the Vixens (6-12, 2-7) by a score of 7-0 behind two goals from
Elizabeth Ranberger and two goals from
Rachel Koerner. Before the game, the Hornets celebrated the careers of the six graduating seniors and it was all smiles for the Hornets.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Hornets outshot the Vixens 29-0 and had 17 shots on cage.
Shenandoah also took the edge in penalty corners 23-0.
Taylor Swann got the start in goal but did not face any shots. Every Hornet goalie saw a quarter of action and the defense and midfield did a fantastic not giving up any shots.
Elizabeth Ranberger scored two goals in the game to give her 12 on the season.
Rachel Koerner scored twice in the 2
nd quarter to give her four goals for the year.
Cassidy Morrison picked up her seventh of the season and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets quickly went on the offense from the jump; however, it took a few minutes for the offense to start clicking. Ranberger,
Farren Winter,
Cassidy Morrison, and
Mairead McKibbin all fired shots at the Vixen keeper but were turned away. In the 7
th minute,
Elizabeth Ranberger would find the back of the cage for her 11
th season goal off an assist from
Cassidy Morrison. Just over four minutes later, the Hornets earned a penalty stroke and
Madison Short stepped up and buried it past the netminder to increase the lead to 2-0 to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, it was more of the same. The Hornets pressured the Vixen defense with shot after shot. Ranberger would cash in for her second goal of the game off of a McKibbin and Morrison assist. Ranberger would then be the one to dish out a helper to fellow senior
Rachel Koerner for her third goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, Koerner would cash in for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season off an assist from
Abby Barefoot. The Hornets would take a 5-0 lead into the intermission.
In the third, the pressure did not stop.
Claudia Lenahan would slip past her defender pick up a bouncing ball in the circle and beat the keeper for her ninth goal of the season. The final nail in the coffin came from
Cassidy Morrison in the 36
th minute as the senior picked up her seventh goal of the season off an assist from
Mairead McKibbin.
UP NEXT
This was the final game of the regular season and now the Hornets will await who will be coming to Winchester for the ODAC Semifinal game next Thursday. Currently, Shenandoah is locked in as the two-seed with an overall record of 15-2 and a conference record of 8-1.
