Women's Soccer Settles for a Tie on Last Minute Goal

WINCHESTER, Va – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team returned to the pitch after a huge 4-0 win against Ferrum over the weekend.  Tonight, in a hard-fought battle, the Hornets (6-2-3, 1-1-2) walked away with a 1-1 tie against Roanoke (6-2-3, 4-0-1.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Shenandoah had the edge on shots, leading the Maroons 15-13.  Both teams were able to get five shots on frame.
Kasie Kilmer got the start in between the pipes for the Hornets, and the junior goalie, came up with four saves.  Roanoke used two goalies in the contest, and between the pair, also came up with four saves on the evening.
Shenandoah had a slight edge in corners with eight opportunities compared to the Maroons' seven.
Kayla Jenkins scored her fifth goal of the year, which leads the team, on an assist from Peyton Lubinsky.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets wasted little time looking to put pressure and attack the Maroon back line and goalie.  Kayla Jenkins fired a shot on frame that the Roanoke goalie needed to make a diving save to keep it a scoreless contest.  Emily Dendis would have back-to-back good scoring opportunities within the first ten minutes of the game, but the Roanoke was up to the challenge of keeping the ball out of the back of the net.  In the 23rd minute, Emily Dendis would send a ball into the box where Peyton Lubinsky was waiting on the far post.  Lubinsky would try and shake her a defender, and after the ball bounced around, found a streaking Jenkins who was left open inside the six, and the junior would put a ball in the corner out of the reach of the diving goalie.  The Hornets continued to apply pressure in the remaining 20 minutes of the half, but Shenandoah could not get an insurance goal, and the Hornets would take the 1-0 lead into the break.

Quickly in the second half, the Hornets left off where they started in the first, applying pressure and earning corner kicks.  Roanoke had a golden opportunity when forward Morgan O'Neil used her speed and found herself on a breakaway coming down the left side.  O'Neil would fire a shot from outside the box, and Kilmer would leave her goal line and challenge, and make a fantastic save to keep the home side up one.  Unfortunately, after a turnover in the midfield, Roanoke found themselves on an odd-man rush and O'Neil would find Rebecca Carr who beat Kilmer in the 88th minute.
