WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah women's soccer continued conference play with a 1-1 draw against Randolph-Macon, on Saturday afternoon in front of the Homecoming crowd. The Hornets (6-2-4, 1-1-3) got a goal from
Kayla Jenkins to give Shenandoah a 1-0 lead over Randolph-Macon (4-6-2, 1-3-1.)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Randolph-Macon held the edge in shots 17-10, and put more shots on goal than the Hornets did (9-5.)
Kasie Kilmer made the start for the Hornets and stopped eight Yellow Jacket shots.
The Hornets had more opportunities off of corners, 7-1, but were not able to find the back of the net from them.
Kayla Jenkins scored her sixth goal of the season and has now scored five goals in the last three games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lots of action to get this game started. It started with
Peyton Lubinsky ripping a shot just off frame 30 seconds into the contest. The Hornets quickly earned two penalty corners as they dominated possession through the first seven minutes of play. In the 7
th minute,
Kayla Jenkins would put Shenandoah up 1-0 on her sixth of the season, and third straight game with at least one goal. That lead was short-lived as the Yellow Jackets countered with a series of give-and-goes down the field and then finally in the back of the net. The Hornets had a few more opportunities in the first but were not able to cash in, and both teams went to the locker room tied at 1.
After the break, both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm, and the game was played in the midfield. Shenandoah did a great job of keeping all shots from Randolph-Macon well outside the 18 and avoided any real scoring threats. Jenkins and Lubinsky were the only Hornets who were able to get shots off in the second, but as the horn sounded the game would go final in a 1-1 draw.
This is four straight contests in which the Hornets earned at least one point in conference play and now sit in seventh with six conference points.
UP NEXT
The Hornets are back in action as they will continue conference play, this time on the road, traveling to Harrisonburg for a matchup with Eastern Mennonite. Kick off for that game is slated for 7 p.m.
