Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team opened up its 2023-24 season with an 84-58 win at home on Friday night versus Regent University in a non-conference game.

The Hornets (1-0), who were only up five at the half, went on a 10-0 run to begin the second as they expanded their lead over the Royals (0-2).

IN BRIEF

Shenandoah and Regent traded points across the first 10 minutes as the teams were tied at 18 with just over nine minutes left in the half. Davion Roberts made the first basket of the season for Shenandoah, while Jaelyn Williams followed that up with a layup for his first basket since returning to SU.

A Joshua Stephen three-pointer put the Hornets up with 0:13 remaining in the first as they'd hold the lead for the rest of the contest. Williams capitalized on four straight shots from the charity stripe to put SU up 33-28 at the break.

Coach Nick Doyle fired his team up during halftime as they scored eight points in the first 90 seconds of the second, carried by shots from beyond the arc by Evan Makle and Roberts.

Shenandoah pushed the advantage to 28 points with five consecutive points from Roberts with 8:07 to go.

Buckets by Anthony Cowan, Landon Russ and Daniel Valentine ended the game, as Shenandoah won by 26.

Williams with 24 and Roberts with 14 lead Shenandoah in points. Nic Pullum was right behind the duo with nine points.

Joseph Baldwin and Binwi Bihai were leaders for boards with eight and seven, respectively. 19 different Shenandoah players saw playing time in the season opener.

Shenandoah hosts Wilson College next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
