Wrestling Completes Cougar Open with Four Medalists, Including One Runner-Up

DANVILLE, Va. – The Shenandoah University wrestling competed in the Cougar Open hosted by Averett University on Sunday.  The Hornets had four medalists including one runner-up which came in the 174-weight class by Dylan Weaver
 
Weaver won his opening match by an 8-5 decision over Kyle Lee.  In his next match, Weaver won with ease over Julian Schott from Marymount by a tech fall, 16-1.  In the quarterfinals, Weaver would once again win by a tech fall 17-2 over Nicholas DaSilva from WVU Tech.  In the semifinals, Weaver continued his run to the championship match with an 8-2 decision win over Sebastian Shered from Queens.  However, in the championship match, Weaver struggled to get anything going and fell by a major decision, 11-2, by Greg Merriman from Queens. 
 
Hunter Thompson took third place in the 184-weight class after going 3-1, after receiving a 1st round bye.  Thompson first won by decision, 7-3, over Jerrel Baskin from Allen.  Thompson would go on to pin Max Underwood from WVU Tech at the 5:37 mark in the match.  Ryan Moose from Marymount would pin Thompson in the semifinals at 4:01.  In the third-place match, Thompson would win by a major decision over Gabriel Hayes from Liberty. 
 
Sean Rinebolt was the other Hornet who found a spot on the podium, with his 5th place finish in the 133-weight class.  Rinebolt received a bye in the first round, before picking up a decision win over the host Averett's AJ Orlando in the second round.  Rinebolt would fall in the quarterfinals before going on to win his next three matches to secure the 5th place finish.  He would win his fourth match by major decision, 5th match by pinfall, and a tight 5th place match by a narrow 14-12 decision. 
 
Christian Johnson-Hunte finished in 8th place in the 141-weight class as an unattached wrestler.  Johnson-Hunte went 3-2 in route to an 8th-place finish.  Johson-Hunte won his first match via a major decision in his opening match, before picking up another win by decision in the second match of the day.  In the quarterfinals, Johnson-Hunte dropped his first match of the day and came back to pick up a win in the consolation round 4 match, before falling in the consolation semifinals.
