ASHLAND, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team opened its weekend with a 58-57 loss to No. 20 University of Mary Washington in a neutral site game at the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Tournament.

Five made free throws in the final minute by the Eagles (4-0) gave them the win despite the Hornets (3-1) outsourcing them 29-21 in the final two quarters of play.

RECAP

In a high-scoring first quarter, it was Mary Washington who got the first basket with a made jumper in its first possession. Shenandoah traveled down the court and responded with a made layup by center Shawnise Campbell.

Maddie Kimble made her first of three three-pointers to make it 5-4 and Campbell hit another layup to give them the lead again at 7-6, as the Hornets began the game 4-4 from the field. Three-pointers from Terese Greene and Sydney Shepos gave Shenandoah a two-point advantage through 10 minutes.

The differential in the game in the second quarter as the Eagles outscored the Hornets 22-11 in the quarter. Shenandoah shot 50% in the quarter but the opposition forced nine turnovers.

Down 37-28 at the half, the Hornets chipped away at the Eagles lead over the next 20 minutes. Six of the ten Shenandoah points in the third were scored by Campbell who finished the game with 18 points. The center added 11 boards to get the double-double.

A three-pointer by Kimble and free throws from Kayla Maxson had SU down by just one with 10 seconds left after trailing by nine with 3:19 to go in the game. Despite SU hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer, UMW went 3-4 from the charity stripe in the final seconds to get a large enough lead for the win.

Kimble and Maxson tied for second in points for Shenandoah with 12. Emily Williams and Shepos had five rebounds each.

14 offensive rebounds from the Eagles gave them 15 second chance points as they held the Hornets to just two second chance points.
