WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah wrestling team hosted the Shenandoah Invitational for the first time with seven teams. The Hornets finished in second place behind Frostburg State University with 138 team points. Shenandoah also placed 10 wrestlers on the podium behind
Sean Rinebolt (133),
Hunter Ballantine (141), and
Dylan Weaver's (174) first-place finishes in their weight classes.
Anakin Burk in the 125-weight class received a first-round bye, before falling to Frostburg State's Alex Bellarin by pin in the quarterfinals. Burk received another bye in the consolation second-round before a third-round victory via pin over Kelly Bailey (Frostburg State.) In the semifinals, Burke advanced past teammate
Elliot Rivera via forfeit before beating UMBC's Henry Sonti in the third-place match via pin.
Sean Rinebolt in the 133-weight class had two opening byes before his first challenge in the semifinals. Rinebolt would have no problem winning his semifinal match or his championship match. In the semis, Rinebolt defeated Caleb Olgers (Apprentice School) by a tech fall (23-7). Then in the championship match, Rinebolt would pick up the pin over Ronald Kratko from Patrick Henry Community College.
Hunter Ballantine in the 141-weight class received an opening-round bye before going on to win his next three matches and take home the gold in the 141 division. In the quarterfinals, Ballantine would pick up a pin just 56 seconds into the match over Zach Alkhatib from Frostburg State. In the semifinals, Ballantine won by tech fall over Maddox Crowe of Patrick Henry Community College (15-0), before going on to win in the finals via pin over Tyler Harris of Patrick Henry.
At 149, Yuri Smaltz received a first-round bye then went on to pick up two wins via pin. First in the quarterfinals, Smaltz won over Adam Razzaq of Marymount at the 1:18 mark, then in the semifinals, Smaltz would pin teammate Cameron Hatchet at the 1:58 mark. Freddy Pimental of Johns Hopkins defeated Smaltz by a 20-7 major decision to finish in second in the weight class.
Cameron Hatchet, also in the 149-weight class, took home a fourth-place finish with two tech fall victories in the opening two rounds, before falling teammate Yuri Smaltz in the semifinals. Now wrestling in the consolation bracket, Hatchet picked up a decision via fall over Thomas Newman of Marymount but would lose via tech fall in the third-place match.
In the 157 weight-class,
Christopher Johnson-Hunte took home a fourth-place finish for the day. Johnson-Hunte won his first two matches via pin before falling to Mason Buckner (Frostburg State) by a 7-0 decision. Johnson-Hunte started his consolation semifinals match but won after his opponent needed to withdraw due to injury. In the third-place match, Johnson-Hunte would fall by a 12-5 decision to Fritz Maurath of Johns Hopkins.
Jalen Cornelius also took home a fourth-place finish in the 165 weight-class after picking up an opening round via pin, then a bye in the quarterfinals before dropping an 11-6 decision to Johns Hopkins' Jake Hoffman in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Cornelius picked up another victory via the pin over Julian Schott of Marymount. In the third-place match, Liam Debaugh, picked up an 8-4 decision to seal fourth place.
Dylan Weaver went 4-0 on the day to take home a first-place victory in the 174 weight-class. Weaver would win via tech fall in the opening round and the quarterfinals. Weaver outscored his first two opponents 36-6 for his two tech fall victories. In the semifinals, Weaver won by pin over Samuel Gledhill of Johns Hopkins before going on to win by major decision, 19-8, over Chris Roybal of Johns Hopkins.
George Vrachnos took home a third-place finish for the invitational after receiving an opening-round bye before losing to Johns Hopkins' Elliot Lee by an 18-3 tech fall. After that loss, Vrachnos would pick up two wins by pin, with one pin coming just 18 seconds into the match. Vrachnos would take home a third-place finish after Elliot Lee (Johns Hopkins) needed to withdraw due to injury.
Hunter Thompson took home a second-place finish in the 184 weight-class after receiving two byes to put him into the semifinals. In the semifinals, Thompson won by pin over Joseph Colony of Frostburg State before falling to Josh Seaton of the Apprentice School by a 7-4 decision.
