Football Loses in Overtime at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team's comeback falls short in a 26-25 overtime loss on Saturday afternoon at Hampden-Sydney College in an ODAC game.

Down in the fourth quarter, the Hornets (5-4, 3-3 ODAC) scored 16 points to force overtime. After a Tigers (6-3, 4-2) touchdown in OT, SU responded with one of its own but missed the point-after attempt as the Tigers hung on for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Steven Hugney completed his first three passes of the game, all for 10 yards or more, to set SU up in field goal range. Scott Martin made a 23-yard field goal to put SU up 3-0. That'd remain the score after one quarter as Shenandoah only got the ball back once more in the frame and failed a fourth down conversion.

In the middle of the second Hampden-Sydney started a possession with the ball already in Shenandoah territory. H-SC ran four times on the five-play drive and capped it off with a two-yard rushing touchdown to take the lead, 7-3. The home team pushed the lead to 10-3 with a field goal late in the half.

The Hornets were held from scoring again until minutes into the fourth quarter as they were down 16-3. In good field position with the ball, the Hornets moved the ball a combined 36 yards on back-to-back plays. First Andre Jackson caught a 26-yard reception and AJ Maxwell followed that up with an 11-yard run up the middle. Two plays later Jackson picked himself up a touchdown to cut the deficit to six with 11 minutes to play.

Shenandoah's defense stepped up big time as Keyshawn Wilder came up with an interception on one drive and on the next drive forced a safety to make it 16-12. The safety was set up by a Jordan Heap 13-yard sack, placing the Tigers deep in their own territory.

After the Safety, Shenandoah received the ball and its drive became the Broden Domenico show. Domenico had three catches for 58 yards during the five-play drive, with his last reception being a 12-yard touchdown to give SU the 19-16 lead with 1:40 to go in the fourth.

Hampden-Sydney didn't let the little time left affect them as they scored the game-tying field goal with 0:07 left on the clock, setting up an overtime finish.

In overtime, the Tigers got the ball first. They converted two third downs on their OT drive and punched in a four-yard rushing TD to put them back up.

Hugney found his top receiver, Domenico, for a one-play 25-yard touchdown drive to bring SU within one of tying the game. However, Shenandoah would fail on the attempt giving the Tigers the narrow victory.

Domenico finished the game with 144 yards on 11 catches. Jackson added 76 yards to the Hornets' receiving game, as three other wide receivers had double-digit yards.

Shenandoah rushed for 120 yards with Maxwell leading the pack with 48 yards on the ground.

Corey Kidwell, Jake Jack and Dallis Kahill teamed up with Heap for four sacks on the afternoon. Eight Hornets registered a tackle for loss in the game as well.
