Hornets Remain Unbeaten With Massive Win Over No. 3 Guilford

WINCHESTER, Va. - The undefeated Shenandoah University men's basketball team knocked off No. 3 Guilford College in a 65-58 ODAC home victory on Tuesday afternoon. The win marks the first-ever win over a nationally ranked ODAC team for SU.

The Hornets (11-0, 3-0 ODAC) only trailed for a portion of the first half as Nick Doyle's team would go on a 10-0 run and never look back in the historic victory over the Quakers (9-1, 2-1).

RECAP
Shenandoah, down 2-0, got help from guards Davion Roberts and Jaylen Williams to put SU on the board and give them an early lead. Role player Joshua Stephen nailed the first three-pointer of the afternoon to put Shenandoah up 7-4. The Quakers responded with a long ball of their own to tie the contest before hitting two free throws and a layup to take the four-point advantage.

Down four, the Hornets started their previously mentioned 10-0 run by hitting two pairs of free throws and added on with a Roberts three to take the lead for the rest of the game, with 8:38 left in the first.

With two minutes left in the opening half, Shenandoah had an eight-point lead but Guilford cut its deficit down to three heading into the break.

Across the first five minutes of the second, center Gavin Bizyak pulled down four defensive boards while scoring a handful of points at the other end of the court, helping SU get up by nine.

The nationally-ranked Quakers crawled back to pull the game within three points which didn't last long as Richard Roger drilled a three to regain the momentum for SU. The two squads traded points over the next several minutes to keep the game close.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Evan Makle and Stephen extend the Hornet's lead to double-digits with just over five minutes left to play. Shenandoah sealed the victory with made shots from the charity stripe from Joseph Baldwin and Roberts.

In the second half, Shenandoah's defense held Guilford to just one made three as the visitors went 4-17 from behind the arc in the game.

Roberts (16), Williams (13), and Stephen (12) were the leading scorers for the Hornets. All nine players who saw action for SU scored at least one point in the game. The Hornets shot over 50% in the second, going 14-26 from the field. Stephen brought down a team-high eight boards.
