Men's Basketball Wraps Up Calendar Year With Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team caps off the 2023 calendar year with a 74-64 win at home over Elizabethtown College in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (12-0) took the lead late in the first half and opened the second with a 16-0 run to pull ahead from the Blue Jays (4-7). SU has now won eight games by at least 10 points this season.

RECAP

Shenandoah's Nic Pullum scored four quick points to give SU a 6-0 lead early. Jaylen Williams, who finished with a double-double, hit a layup and added an assist during the early run. Joshua Stephen knocked down a three to give the Hornets their largest lead of the half at 13-6.

Elizabethtown held Shenandoah scoreless for almost five minutes as they crawled back from the deficit. Two baskets within a matter of 40 seconds had the Blue Jays up by four with 8:14 left in the half.

The visitors stayed ahead until Binwi Bihai scored five straight points, helping Shenandoah tie the game at 27. Bihai then converted an and-one opportunity to give his squad a three-point lead. The center finished the game with 11 points.

Elizabethtown got the lead again before SU ended the half on a miniature scoring run to take the 36-34 lead into the break.

Nick Doyle's team came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders jumping out to an 18-point advantage. Davion Roberts and Williams paired up for 14 points during the 16-0 run. Williams led Shenandoah in scoring with 23 points.

Later in the second, Gavin Bizyak hit a layup to give SU a 19-point lead, its largest lead of the game. The lead would be too much for the Blue Jays to overcome as the Hornets took the win.

Williams brought down 14 rebounds which ties his career-high for rebounds in a game. The guard had 14 boards against Gallaudet back in November of 2021. Bizyak was the only other SU player with 10 rebounds today.
