Hornets Swarm the Barn and Leave SVU with Win

Williams Double-Double, Campbell 12 Points, 5 Boards, 5 Steals, 5 Blocks

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Shenandoah Hornets were back on the road Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup with Southern Virginia University.  The Hornets (7-2, 5-0) came from behind to leave Buena Vista with a 59-51 win over the Knights.  The Hornets were led offensively by Emily Williams with another double-double, 10 points, 12 rebounds going 3-6 from the field and 2-3 from deep.  Shawnise Campbell, fresh off her most recent ODAC Player of the Week honors, had 12 points, five boards, five blocks, and five steals on 6-8 shooting.

The Hornets got off to an extremely hot start with Shawnise Campbell going 4-4 from the field and quickly gave Shenandoah the 8-4 lead with just under 7 minutes left in the first period.  Shenandoah would go cold and struggle to score until Sydney Shepos would give the Hornets the 9-8 lead back after splitting a pair of free throws from the line.  With just over a minute left in the opening stanza, Terese Greene would nail a deep three, putting the Hornets up 12-10.  With Southern Virginia at the line, the Knights would make the first one, get the offensive rebound on the second, and put the back to take a 13-12 lead into the second.

Shenandoah got off to a slow start in the second going scoreless through the first four minutes of play.  Maddie Kimble would finally get the Hornets back on track with a three to tie the game at 15 with just over five minutes left to play in the half.  The Knights would use a 7-0 run and regain the lead 22-17 with 2:46 left on the clock.  Gabby Krystofiak would drill her first three of the game to pull the Hornets with four at 24-20.  That basket would be the last of the half for Shenandoah, and Shenandoah would be down 26-20 at the break.

After the break, the Hornets got an early bucket from Shawnise Campbell, but once again the Knights kept pulling away after hitting a three to go back up seven, 30-23.  However, the Hornets would turn the pressure up, get the stops they needed, and get baskets from Campbell, Krystofiak, and Kimble to pull within one point, 30-29 with 6:19 to go in the period.  Once again, every time the Hornets would close the gap, the Knights would start to pull away.  With a 38-35 Knights lead, Emily Williams would drill a three to tie the game at 38 at the 2:45 mark.  SVU would hit a free throw and take the one point, their last lead of the game.  Kayla Maxson would hit back-to-back jumpers to start to build the lead, and then Zoe Star would hit a three at the buzzer in the third to push the Hornets lead to six going into the fourth.

SVU would cut the lead to three early in the fourth, but Maggie Rooklin calmly hit two free throws to stop the run.  Sydney Shepos would snag an offensive rebound and hit the putback layup before Terese Greene would nail a deep three pushing the lead back up to eight points going into media timeout.  The Knights would convert an and one with 4:17 to go in the game, and that would be their final basket.  Emily Williams would secure the victory with a three with just under two minutes to play, and Shawnise Campbell would reject the Knights final try as the clock expired.
