WINCHESTER, Va – Shenandoah women's soccer picked up their first home win of the 2023 campaign in their opening round match of the Shenandoah Tournament against Susquehanna. The Hornets (3-0) beat the River Hawks (0-2) with a goal in the 75
th minute off of the foot of
Maya Horner for her first goal of the season.
In the first half, both teams were attempting to find their offensive mojo and neither team could figure out the opposing defense. The Hornets had two good scoring chances in the first half with shots from
Roxana Nielson and
Chandler Gallant, but the duo was not able to get anything passed the River Hawk net minder.
Susquehanna's best scoring chance came in the 19
th minute when Chloe Michaels fired a shot heading toward the top corner, but
Karissa Dominick was able to snatch it out of the air for her only save of the first half. Both teams went to the locker room scoreless at the half.
The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of the second half, but the Hornets started to pick up momentum and put relentless pressure on the River Hawk defenders. Nielson would fire a shot that was saved by the goalie but was able to earn a corner kick off of that shot. Then five minutes later in the 75
th minute,
Maya Horner was able to beat the River Hawk goalie and secure the 1-0 win to keep the Hornets perfect on the season.
Shenandoah outshot Susquehanna 10-3 on the afternoon, putting five of those shots on frame.
Karissa Dominick got the start in goal for the Hornets and made two saves in the contest for the clean sheet.
Next up for the Hornets, it is a quick turnaround as Shenandoah will be back in action Sunday afternoon to finish out the Shenandoah Tournament. The Hornets will face Carnegie Mellon University, who defeated Bridgewater 2-0 in their opening matchup, at 1 pm.
