BRIDGEWATER, Va – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team opened ODAC conference play on the road with Bridgewater College. The Hornets and Eagles battled to a 2-2 draw in the conference opener. Shenandoah (3-1-2) found two second-half goals off of the foot of
Nathan Yared to give the Hornets the lead. Bridgewater (4-0-3) grabbed the lead in the second half, even though Shenandoah was applying consistent pressure.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Bridgewater had the edge in shots (19-16) and with a slight edge in shots on goal (9-7).
Shenandoah had the advantage on corners (11-4).
Travis Jett made eight saves in the contest.
Nathan Yared scored his third and fourth goals for the season to lead the team in goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Shenandoah started on the attack right away, earning three corners within the first three minutes of play and
Maynor Menendez firing a shot on goal that the Eagle goalie had to turn away. Of their 11 corners, Shenandoah would earn eight of them in the first half. Shots by
Hatim Elkhasouani and
Tarick Kamara would just miss the target and the score would remain tied at 0 going to the half.
Bridgewater would strike first coming out of the intermission on a goal from Riley Queen off an assist from Trey Widrick, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 55
th minute. That lead would be short-lived as the Hornets would draw a foul just outside the box and junior
Nathan Yared would bury the free kick to bring the score level at 1 in the 63
rd minute. Just over five minutes later it would be Yared again this time off an assist from
Connor Robles to put Shenandoah up 2-1 in the 68
th minute. Unfortunately, like most of this game, that lead was short-lived when the Hornets attempted to clear the ball deep in their defensive third, but the ball caromed off a defender and past Jett. Both teams would make a final push over the course of the last 10 minutes, but neither side would score again.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will continue conference play on Saturday when they will travel to Lexington for a 1 pm kick off with Washington & Lee.
